The Celebration of Kannawidan Festival in Ilocos Sur

The Kannawidan Festival in Ilocos Sur is being celebrated in the province to commemorate the anniversary of Ilocos Sur as a province. It is being celebrated every month of February and it is very significant to us Ilocanos because it is the grandest festivity celebration of the province and it even lasts almost the whole of the month. However, due to COVID-19 pandemic, the usual activities during the celebration were not undertaken.
When we hear the word “kannawidan” it comes in our minds a very grand and enjoyable celebration of culture of Ilocanos, as all “kaprobinsyanos” are coming to Vigan City to attend and participate the different activities and programs. It usually showcases all the cultures and traditions of Ilocanos from different municipalities. Due to pandemic the local government of the province did not conduct the usual programs because of the strict implementation of the IATF protocols to avoid the spread of the virus. This year’s celebration of the said festival is limited only to selected programs and activities such as the Search for Sanyata and Trade Fair of different municipalities to show case their native and famous products. During this year, our family was not able to attend and visit the venues of celebration because we decided to just stay at home to be protected from the virus.
Although the celebration was simple, it still went well because it is more important to think of our health and safety. We Ilocoanos during these hard times preferred to think of what is best for us than to put our lives into risk. We hope and pray that the pandemic will soon end for us to be back with our usual and normal lives and hopefully next year the Kannawidan Festival’s programs and activities will be again undertaken and enjoyed by us Ilocanos.
